Although the artist considers all of her work self-portraiture, this piece is the same height and weight as the artist and is a direct representation of her body size. The steel structure is a depiction of the otherworldly, very sharp trees and plants found in southern California, but is also a reference to the very man-made cityscape she inhabits in Los Angeles. The sculpture is something in between natural and industrial. Made during fire season, this sculpture depicts a tree that is trapped, trying to break free, and struggling to survive. Explorations in the power of weight, cantilevering, a frozen state of motion, and the anxiety evoked by these tensions are a part of the artwork.
