Like a genetically altered fruit, this sculpture with florescent, almost radioactive looking colors appears like an alien object in an other-worldly environment. Calcite is a mineral which forms over thousands of years as regions of the world where bodies of water once existed slowly dry up and the minerals in the water precipitate out of solution to form rock, like calcite. The materiality of the work itself becomes a commentary on the environment in which it is installed as Death Valley and many desert regions of the world continue to grow hotter and larger due to global warming. Thus, this otherworldly environment and sculpture of the future is also a reflection of our present. The shell, composed of resin, a synthetic plastic material, contrasts dramatically with the natural calcite, drawing attention to the plastic infested world we live in. The work is a day/night sculpture. The LEDs are activated within the work as night approaches allowing the sculpture to bioluminesce in the dark.
