Hand-carved calcite
17 inches x 17 inches x 8 inches
The naturally occurring concavities within a piece of calcite were exaggerated by the sculptor, thus allowing the work to progress through time to a state of greater erosion from the elements. Calcite is a mineral which forms over thousands of years as regions of the world where bodies of water once existed slowly dry up and the minerals in the water precipitate out of solution and form rock, like calcite. As the minerals precipitate out of solution they form naturally occurring pools like those one may see on a salt flat and those present in this sculpture.
