Specimen Under Light Canopy
Welded steel, plexiglass, and prisms
4 ft x 3 ft x 2 ft
A welded-steel machine-like creature curls up, asleep under a plexiglass prism-covered canopy. Something from the past or from the future, Specimen references the ancient prehistoric fossils the artist finds in her limestone when she is carving. It’s an organism that no longer exists or perhaps will exist in the future. The steel creates the iridescence of scales but also references an imaginary, robotic sci-fi form. Like a microscopic creature under a magnifying glass, the canopy offers a lens for the viewer to look through and a protective enclosure for Specimen to rest under. When the piece is lit by the sun, rainbows shine down from the prisms in the canopy, making us aware of the wavelengths that are an invisible but fundamental part of life on Earth.
